Tying Lessons Section

The main focus of this section of the site is to teach purposeful fly tying.   Purposeful fly pattern design and tying is the key to taking your fly fishing experience to the next level.  Selecting a lesson from the drop down menu under "Tying Lessons" above will take you to that lesson.  For the beginner, the lessons are chronological.  Start with #1.  For the more experienced tier do the same (you might learn something) if you like or skip to a topic of choice.  I don't teach specific patterns.  Instead, I will concentrate on particular techniques in a evolutionary manner and then supply a few patterns that utilize what each lesson covers.  Each lesson will introduce a new and maybe more complicated technique.  The patterns shown will take advantage of that technique and any technique from a previous lesson.  Although this site concentrates on wet flies, most of the techniques will be able to be utilized across different platforms.  I believe this method will make you a better tier.  Armed with a strong foundation of tying technique and with the knowledge of the purpose of  those techniques the tier will be able to  pre-envision a fly design and how to construct it.   Tying a particular pattern for specific water and presentation purposefully by thinking critically before hand and not just lashing materials to a hook is the key.  It  will have you tying better flies that work the way you intended, where you intended and in the end growing your skills not just at tying... but fly fishing as well.    I hope you enjoy the ride..
