Custom Flies from Old Hat Fly Tying.
I offer the highest quality tying of fishing flies. I use only hand selected tried and true top quality materials in all my fly patterns. My tying methods are purposeful, thoughtful, not rushed and produce some of the most durable pleasing wet flies you will find anywhere. I specialize in tying wingless wet flies for trout, steelhead and trout spey presentations. I offer a variety of my own flymph patterns, spider patterns and various other wets I have designed over my many years of fishing wet flies. I can also tie any of the classic wet fly or spider patterns if materials are available at the time. I am a custom tier. A one person shop. I can customize any order. Please feel free to contact me with what you are after. I would be happy to help you make the right decisions for your wet fly needs. |
Please see the bottom of the page for ordering and shipping information
Patterns are customizable. Do you want a gold wire rib for weight or a little flash added to your order? I can do that. Would you prefer the color tone to be a bit more yellow or olive? I can do that. Would you like the pattern on an up eye hook? I can do that too. Do you prefer a different type of hackle. I can do that. Want to start from scratch and match your local hatch. I can do that as well. Just communicate your needs in your order and we can have further discussion on options, availability and any price differences. A note on hooks. I am offering my patterns tied on contemporary Firehole Outdoors competition sticks as the standard. These are barbless, sharp, USA designed and marketed hooks that have achieved a great reputation for quality and hooking ability. Plus, I simply like supporting the small business.
The Special Offering Section is for my enjoyment and to keep you coming back. I love to tie flies. The offerings here are for a limited time and subject to availability. Enjoy!

Traditional Style Flymphs
All my flymph patterns are tied in the traditional method. Using the finest quality silk thread, custom blended dubbing ropes are pre-built on a Clark's type block and stored on cards to "cure". The dubbing ropes are then used to build the body of the pattern. The tying steps are historically correct and provide an extremely durable fly. You won't find these in any other retail fly shop. At the moment, I offer a selection of flymph patterns that have provided a large portion of my fishing success over the years. The patterns available here mimic a vast variety of insect species. I believe the flymph design is the most versatile fly design available. Although they excel fished as an active emerger, changing presentation allows them to be fished as a nymph or a dun in the surface as well. I have fished entire mornings or afternoons with one flymph. By changing your presentation, one flymph can fish successfully in many types of water and at various depths. Fish these upstream, dead drifted, downstream, on the swing etc. Let how the fish want it determine your presentation. This means less time fiddling with fly selection, more active fishing and more opportunities at fish.
